St. Stephen March was commissioned by the Alberta Band Association.  

The piece was written with the intention of featuring the often neglected low brass and low woodwinds.  They play the melody in its first hearing, while other instruments play a supporting role.  The melody is, by intention, a bit of a stretch for the big instruments.

The eighth/two sixteenth rhythm pattern is prominent throughout, and must be very clearly articulated.
